Take a look just how District 92 brought their schools together through ability awareness events culminating in a sold out fundraiser game vs. the LWSRA Hawks!
In the Schools
Assemblies and “P.E. take-over” days allow LWSRA to reach out to youth, teens and adults in the community to build a better understanding and acceptance of those with physical or developmental disabilities.Â
LWSRA’s ability awareness program has been a pivotal tool in our fight to raise awareness for individuals with disabilities. Through education, training and hands-on experience, we hope to extend this knowledge to everyone.
The most popular option we have provided is P.E. Takeover days at our area schools where we bring out adapted equipment and allow students the opportunity to actively try playing adapted sports such as wheelchair basketball, sit volleyball and goalball. We also provide options for assemblies or smaller group activities. Our team can tailor an awareness event to fit your needs! If you are interested in having an event for your school, please review the information below.
Geographic areas served: LWSRA’s main objective is to provide awareness opportunities in areas served by our eight-member park districts (Crete, Frankfort, Manhattan, Mokena, New Lenox, Peotone and Wilmington). Schools outside of these areas may still apply for awareness events below, however we may need additional time to coordinate your request with the special recreation association that serves your community. All events outside our geographic area will be subject to a mileage fee for transportation of equipment and staff travel time.
